Melbourne United is thrilled to announce the launch of a new Coach Mentor Program, in conjunction with Helping Hoops.

United will invite aspiring coaches aged 16-25 years to a one-year program, providing professional development, training and mentoring to identified coaches.

The program will provide the six successful candidates an opportunity to learn from the best in the business and advance as a coach, thanks to the support of the Victorian Government.

Working alongside members of the Melbourne United coaching staff, coaches will learn high level X’s & O’s, knowledge to build a complete program, drill demonstrations, offensive and defensive coaching strategy, the Melbourne United coaching philosophy, and leadership skills and techniques to coach their players.

Speaking about the program, United Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he was excited to be a part of an initiative helping to develop a new generation of coaches.

“It’s always special when you can share your knowledge to help people who are trying to get better in an area they love,” he said.

“This program will be a great way to teach another generation of coaches the ins and out of how we do things here at Melbourne United.”

Once coaches attend a series of events across the 12 months, it’ll be their turn to take there ins.

Melbourne United will provide ongoing professional development opportunities as a paid community coach at clinics, camps, academy programs and Helping Hoops programs.

Helping Hoops Executive Director Teuila Reid touched on their excitement ahead of the new program launching.

"We are really excited about being able to offer the opportunity to aspiring coaches within our community the chance to learn from a collection of experienced and accomplished coaches.

“This program and the connections it will undoubtedly facilitate gives us the chance to further deepen our collective impact. There is much talk about Helping Hoops being about 'more than basketball'. This program provides a platform for us to really demonstrate what that means.”
